FLY FISHING REPORT SOUTHERN UTAH

It has been an interesting couple of week for the fishing here, the wind has put a lot of the fish down on some the high mountain lakes and then there have been some streams that have been fishing as close to incredible as one can get.

Boulder Mtn.
Boulder Mountain has been fishing really well in the fishcreek Beaver Dam area, however with access limited on the north and east end there has been a ton of people up there, this is the time of year for scout troops to hike the mountain and they all seem to be based out of the Fishcreek area,
in spite of the crowds some nice fish are still being caught there, we fish a prince nymph with a lightning bug trailer or ice cream cone midge and fish the cover and have been doing well.
the boulder Top has been plagued with wind, when it lays down the fishing has been really good,
when the wind is up the Gray ling  seem to prefer the shallows, the Brook trout don't seem to be as active on the windy days, when it calms down they are actively feeding, we have caught them on bead headed nymphs like prince and pheasant tails, a mohair leech is still working well in the row lakes area.

Thousand Lakes Mtn.
Thousand Lake Mountain has been fishing great in the Solomon basin area when the wind has been calm, the fish have been slamming small olive woolly buggers and other damsel fly imitations,
when they have also been actively taking the adult damsel flies.

U.M. Creek / Seven Mile Creek.
Both have been a dry fly purists heaven the last week!!!!, Green Drakes? Yep! Callibaetis? Yes! Caddis? uh huh! as well as a few yellow sallies and skwala stone flies as well, we fish a bushy dry on top and drop a small bead head below, the action can be fast on both waters.

Mill Meadow Res/
flows from Forsyth are bringing the water level back up! the fishing has been fast for both perch and Browns at the inlets, you can also walk the open shore lines early and throw a small nymph or dry at rising trout and do really well.

Forsyth Res
Fishing has been good at the north end and using damsel fly nymph imitations, there is a great hatch of Damsels on that end. try fishing a bead head zug bug, evenings seem to be best.

Fremont River. the river below highway 12 now has a little color in it making it more difficult to fish,
a few fish are feeding but only in the late evening when the caddis flies are moving, move down river slow and watch for feeding fish, if you spot them you can usually hook in to them.

Fly Fishing Report for June 13 2012

Fish Lake.

Fishing has remained good at the Twin Creeks Area, a sz. 14 soft hackle has been working well
trailed behind a sz. 10 olive bugger.

Forsyth Res.
Fishing has been good this year, with Tiger trout being the most predominant catch, the Damselfly's
are starting to hatch and the fish are keying in on the nymphs,  imitate the nymphs underneath when there is wind on the lake or there seems to be very few fish rising, when the fish are rising target them with adult patterns the takes can be exciting...

Millmeadow.
Fishing remains good in the evening when the lake midges are out, nearly any smaller nymph or dry will pick up cruising fish.

 Thousand Lakes Mtn.
The fishing remains incredible in the Solomons Basin area and at round and Deepcreek,  the damselfly's are hatching in the basin and at Round, the nymphs were also seen in Deep Creek.
fishing for the cutthroat and Rainbows from a tube in the mossy areas of the lake seems to get you in to the biggest fish, For Deepcreek a leech pattern fished deep was the only thing we tried that seemed to work.

Boulder Mtn.
The Fire is pretty much contained on the east end, access is available to the Fishcreek and Blindlake
area,  the road to Donkey and round remains closed, fire crews are mopping up the Hot spots on the mtn now, it appears that both Coleman res, and the Bullberries were burned over. Lost lake seems to have been spared.  we Fished the south end of the Mtn last week and did really well in the Row Lakes area, a Mohair Leech pattern fished deep worked well, we caught Brookies at 14 inches.
there was a Bear and her 2nd year cub sighted in the Fishcreek area so be sure to keep a tidy camp,
the fishing has been best at fishcreek with ice cream cone midges and prince nymphs.

Fremont River.
The upper has been pretty slow, releases from Johnson valley Res have kept the water off color.
there are some reports of people doing well with a san jaun worm, we suggest an olive bugger.
The Lower Fremont below hiway 12 continues to run clear, there is a good Caddis and stone fly hatch going on through out most of the Lower Fremont and the fish are activly feeding.

U.M and Seven mile.
Both Streams have been fishing well, the cutthroat on U.M have moved off of there reds and are back tight to the bank, fishing with a Hopper Dropper pattern has been best at both streams.

FIRE ON BOULDER MTN UTAH

The Fire continues to burn on the north and east slope. it is now over 50% contained at the last report.
winds pushed it back on to it's self Wednesday and Thursday helping to control it.
with higher winds yesterday and this morning it has gained some more ground, however it is below the rim now in very rocky terrain making it nearly impossible to fight.
What dose this mean for the fishing... all roads leading up on the east and north end slopes are closed,
soooo No access to the Fishcreek and Beaver dam areas or any lakes on the Donkey Coleman Roads.
if your favorite place to fish is the east end you are out of luck.  pray for rain I guess... because this truly sucks...

on a side note the Fremont below highway 12 continues to fish decent with some nice 14 to 16 inch browns, the caddis fly hatch is in full swing and the fish are keying in on them in the evenings through out the lower Fremont.

U.M. creek also continues to fish fair... the cutthroat have moved back in to the runs and undercut banks, using a dry dropper system works well.

Seven Mile Creek also continues to fish well with a dry dropper set up. and there are reports that lakecreek has been producing some nice little brookies as well.

Thousand Lakes Mtn.
The fishing remains good mostly for planter rainbows at in the soloman basin area and round lake with some nicer Brook trout being caught on Meeks and Neffs.

FIRE ON BOULDER MTN

Please note that
due to the fire on the north slope of Boulder Mtn, the road up to coleman and Donkey has been closed... that means no access to Donkey lake, Coleman, Bullberries, Lost, Round, solitare, bob's hole ect...
they will begin to fight this fire on june 6th, currently it looks like high shifting winds may have caused the fire to burn over coleman res' and possibly the bullberries...

Fly Fishing Report for June 4th

Southern Utah Fly Fishing report and pictures...

Fremont River.
The Upper Fremont is bank full still with flows from Johnson Valley Res,
fishing is best from mammoit springs down to millmeadow res. best flies have been olive woolly buggers,  a hopper dropper set up can work as well fished through the edges and eddies.

Lower Fremont below highway 12 continues to run clear and the Salmon flies and caddis are in full swing.

Millmeadow res'
The reservoir is dropping as water is released for irrigation use.  olive grizzled woolly buggers in size 10 have been working well. we have also been using prince nymphs and picking up fish.

Forsyth Res'
is Finally fishing well, we have been fishing olive buggers trailed with a pheasant tail nymph and doing well.
we have also been fishing near the springs and catching them on dries in the evening, there continues to be a good olive midge hatch and the fish key in on them in the evening.

U.M Creek.
fishing has been much better the last couple of days as the cutthroat  spawn winds down on this water.
we have been fishing tan hoppers with a dropper along the banks and doing really well.

Seven Mile.
this has been another stream that has been fishing well. again we have been using a hopper dropper
pattern and picking up plenty of fish.

Thousand Lakes Mtn.
Fishing Continues to remain good at Round Lake, with leech patterns and soft hackles.
Solomons basin continues to fish well also with the same patterns...
meeks has slowed down some, there are still some great brook trout being caught.

Boulder Mtn...
fishing has been good to fantastic at most lakes. Lower Bowns has been incredible trolling woolly buggers and nymphs, fishcreek and Beaver Dam have been fishing really well also with nymph patterns, more and more water is opening up and fishing well. a fire has started on the north slope that if it spreads could close access to Blind lake and all neighboring lakes...
